Inmetro updates requirements for the evaluation of the sustainable production processes of leather

One of the main objectives of those who work with leather in Brazil is to corroborate their internal sustainability practices with certifications that confirm this conformity.

Courovale, for example, is a national reference in development care from environmentally friendly, socially just and economically viable actions, given our Diamond seal conferred by Certificação de Sustentabilidade do Couro Brasileiro (CSCB).

Due to the increasing demands of sustainable production from the world market, Courovale’s positioning is clear regarding the importance of sustainable development for the perpetuity of the business. This way, we strive to elevate quality standards and respect the wishes of buyers and the market regarding sustainable fashion.

Changes to the sustainability evaluation

Due to this, recently, Inmetro updated it’s regulation regarding the Requirements of the evaluation of conformity (RAC) for the sustainable production processes of leather. This revision was done in function of the new regulatory model provided in the regulation ABNT NBR 16.296:2020, which substituted the 2014 version of this regulation.

It’s worth noting that this text does not change the rules of the certification, being only a revision and alignment of the requirements of the regulations of the sustainable production processes of leather
The Federal Government ordinance dealing with this change came into force on June 1, 2022.

The update occurred due to the solicitation of the Centro das Indústrias de Curtumes do Brasil (CICB) to INMETRO, having the substitution of the ABNT regulation in mind. The Senai Certificate Organism, accredited by Inmetro, is the entity responsible for conceding the Brazilian Leather Sustainability Certificate, of which Courovale has Diamond seal.

According to the CICB solicitation, the improvements implemented in the new version of the ABNT will help not only the companies that are striving to implement sustainable production processes for leather, but also previously certified tanneries.

Courovale strives is to promote sustainable actions in it’s production processes, which resulted in the national and international recognition of these practices. Learn more about our sustainability policies and contact us!
